Danish shipping giant Maersk A/S could lay off up to a third of its workforce as a part of its restructuring plan.

A spokesperson for the company, which employs 80,000, said that up to 27,000 of its workers could be affected by the cuts. Maersk's units Damco and Safmarine are likely to be targetted by the reductions, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"Some will experience big changes, others small. Some are moving to new jobs, and a smaller number will, unfortunately, become redundant, which we take very seriously," Maersk executive Vincent Clerc said in the press release.
