UEFA announces new Champions League format

The new Champions League format to be implemented from 2024 was officially confirmed by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) on Monday.

As agreed on by the UEFA executive committee during an official meeting in Montreux, Switzerland, the number of clubs that will participate in the first stage has gone up to 36 from the previous 32. This information follows an earlier announcement where 12 major league members announced their plans to break away and start their own rival league called the Super League. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin stated earlier today that all of the breakaway clubs that join the Super League will be banned from participating in the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup.

Under the new format, all 36 participating clubs will be brought together into a single pool, a notable change from the current system where the clubs are placed in groups of four.
