Johnson: Tough measures still needed to fight COVID

Monday, 19. April 2021 16:21

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson stressed on Monday the importance of keeping "very tough measures" in effect to avoid the further spread of COVID-19, especially following the emergence of the new variant of the virus originating from South Africa.

"At the moment, we don't have conclusive evidence that it [the South African strain] does escape the vaccines in a very dangerous way, but we have to be cautious," he said. "Our program, our road map is deliberately cautious, with the intention of being irreversible."

Britain entered the second stage of its roadmap for easing restrictions on April 12. Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Johnson canceled his planned trip to India amid new spikes in infections from COVID-19 in that country.
