Polls close as Germany votes for new chancellor

Election polls in Germany closed on Sunday, with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) slightly edging out the alliance of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) according to the initial polls, bringing Olaf Scholz one step closer to the chancellorship.

The ARD poll indicated that both the SPD and the CDU/CSU received 25% of the vote, with SDP coming in slightly higher, while the ZRF poll showed that SPD received 26% and CDU/CSU got 24%.

Meanwhile, the Greens came in third with 15% of the vote, as the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) parties both got 11% of the votes.
