Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE announced on Thursday that a booster shot for their coronavirus vaccine increases the efficacy of the vaccine to 95.6%.

The companies said that those that received the booster dose saw their protection against the virus nearly match the protection following the second dose of the vaccine, while those that didn't, saw their protection drop. Moreover, the trial for the 30 microgram booster dose included more than 10,000 individuals aged 16 and older.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla commented on the trial: "These results provide further evidence of the benefits of boosters as we aim to keep people well-protected against this disease. In addition to our efforts to increase global access and uptake among the unvaccinated, we believe boosters have a critical role to play in addressing the ongoing public health threat of this pandemic."
