German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (pictured) stated on Wednesday that he doesn't see how the country could handle future coronavirus pandemic waves without compulsory vaccination, adding that receiving the fourth dose will be necessary at some point.

Speaking at a press conference, he revealed that the government already ordered 80 million doses of BioNTech SE's Omicron-specific shot, which should become available in the spring of 2022.

Germany also ordered four million doses of the Novavax Inc. vaccine, which was recently approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), as well as 11 million doses of still-not-authorized Valneva SE's jab, he also announced.
