Europe opens lower ahead of consumer report

European markets started Friday's trading session in the red as the United Kingdom's retail data missed the mark in December. A report on the euro area consumer confidence will follow later in the day.

The FTSE 100 started the day losing 1.19% at 9:02 am CET, as the Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC declined by 4.48%. The DAX dropped 1.39% at the same time. led by Siemens Energy SE, which plummeted 9.15%. The CAC 40 was down by 1.39%, with Stellantis NV falling by 3.69%.

The euro traded 0.26% higher against the dollar and sold for 1.13324 at 9:05 am CET, while the pound was 0.14% lower and went for 1.35681.
