Salman Rushdie's (pictured) attacker, the 24-year-old New Jersey man Hadi Matar said that the respects Iran's late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, New York Post reported on Wednesday. Matar refused to answer whether the attack was inspired by Khomeini's 1989 fatwa on the author over his book "The Satanic Verses."

"I respect the Ayatollah. I think he’s a great person. That’s as far as I will say about that," Matar said. He also added that he is surprised Rushdie survived the attack.

Iran has "categorically" denied any connection to Matar.
