Fed's Bowman: Future of labor supply uncertain

Wednesday, 17. August 2022 20:25

Federal Reserve Board Governor Michelle Bowman said on Wednesday that the future of labor supply is uncertain, even though the labor market is robust. The governor also commented that some who have already retired may feel compelled to return to work as high inflation and strong employment are likely to have an effect on labor and employment.

"On the demand side, the labor market continues to be strong and there are abundant job opportunities for workers of all education and skill levels. With about four million fewer people participating in the workforce today, there are still plenty of jobs available even if we see the number of job openings reduced," she underlined.

Bowman added there is potential for "greater jobs for women in the future," as more schools and daycares continue to open up, noting that "working women still carry out most childcare responsibilities."
