Argentine president rejects VP corruption verdict

Wednesday, 07. December 2022 03:27

Argentinian President Alberto Fernandez dismissed the outcome of Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's corruption case.

"Today, in Argentina, an innocent person has been sentenced," Fernandez said, arguing that Kirchner was "persecuted through complacent judges" and that the trial was conducted in an "unfair" manner. The head of state said that due process requirements in their simplest forms were not met and "all good men and women who love democracy and the rule of law" must stand by the vice president.

Kirchner was sentenced to a six-year prison sentence and banned from holding public office after she was found guilty of embezzling $1 billion through public works initiatives during her tenure as president of the republic.
