Wall Street opens higher after jump in housing starts

Wall Street started on new highs on Friday after data showed that US housing starts surged 16.9% in December, industrial production decreased by 0.3% in the same month and investors remained focused on the recently-signed phase one trade deal and the earnings season. Before the opening bell, Schlumberger said it posted a loss per share of $0.24 in the last quarter of 2019.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 0.12% at 9:30 am ET. The Nasdaq 100 rose 0.38% at 9:30 am ET, led higher by Qualcomm which jumped 2% at 9:33 am ET. The S&P 500 was 0.21% higher at 9:30 am ET as State Street Corporation rose 2.91% at 9:31 am ET after beating earnings estimates.

The euro fell 0.32% to 1.11020 against the dollar at 9:32 am ET.
