Consumer confidence in Germany has stabilized in January, while the forecast for February increased by just 0.2 points on a monthly basis to come in at negative 6.7 points, market research institute GfK revealed in its report published on Thursday.

Consumer sentiment rose in January after observing decreases for three consecutive months, with the indicator going up by 5.7 points month-on-month and more than 21 points year-on-year to reach 22.8 points. Income expectations expanded by 10 points in comparison to the previous month to come in at 16.9 points, while the propensity to buy increased by 4.4 points to reach 5.2.

"Despite rising incidences and inflation, consumers are once again showing some optimism at the beginning of the year. In particular, they are hoping for a slight alleviation in price trends [...]. Nevertheless, consumers' price expectations remain significantly higher than in recent years," GfK's consumer expert Rolf Buerkl commented on the results.
