European stock markets closed mostly lower on Monday following a day filled with economic data. Earlier, the European Commission confirmed that consumer confidence recovered in both the EU and the eurozone in January 2023. Meanwhile, Germany’s gross domestic product (GDP) adjusted for price, season, and calendar declined by 0.2% in the fourth quarter of 2022. The DAX lost 0.16% at the close, with Infineon down by 2.94%. In France, the CAC 40 fell 0.21%, while Renault decreased by 4.12%. Meanwhile, the pan-European Euro Stoxx 50 index lost 0.44%, and Prosus declined by 6.29%. Across the English Channel, the FTSE 100 rose 0.25%, as J. Sainsbury increased by 3.76%. On the currency front, the euro was flat against the dollar at 5:28 pm CET, selling for $1.08643. In comparison, the pound was down by 0.14% to go for $1.23730 simultaneously. |
