US opens lower on earnings, jobless claims data

Major stock markets in the United States opened lower on Thursday after several earnings and jobless claims reports showed lukewarm results. Twitter, American Airlines, AT&T, and Dow Inc all reported drops in revenue year-on-year in the second quarter of 2020. Meanwhile, the US Labor Department confirmed an increase in the initial jobless claims for the week ending July 17 by 109,000.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded 0.19% lower at the opening bell as Dow Inc decreased by 3.51%. The Nasdaq 100 lost 0.14% and the S&P dropped by 0.011%, with Citrix Systems declining by 7.96% on both indexes.

The euro went down by 0.12% to the dollar to sell for $1.15556 at 9:27 am ET.
