Lufthansa reaches deal with pilots to secure jobs until 2022

Lufthansa and the pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) reached an agreement to secure jobs until March 2022 and cut costs amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The airline noted pilots' reduced working hours will be extended until the end of 2021 and salaries will be adjusted accordingly. Furthermore, the two sides agreed that pay increases will be suspended until March 2022, but layoffs for operational reasons have also been ruled out. The measures apply to pilots at Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, Lufthansa Aviation Training and a subgroup of Germanwings pilots.

"We want to use the time covered by this crisis collective agreement to agree on sustainable structural solutions with VC in response to the changed conditions and to be able to avoid layoffs even after the crisis agreement has expired," said Michael Niggemann, Executive Board Member for Human Resources and Legal Affairs at Lufthansa.
