Russia refuses to reroute flight around Belarus

Lufthansa's Austrian Airlines announced on Thursday that a flight from Vienna to Moscow had to be cancelled after Russian aviation authorities declined to approve a route change that would avoid the airspace above Belarus territory.

"Austrian Airlines has suspended flights over Belarusian airspace until further notice based on the recommendation from the EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). [...] The change in the flight path must be approved by the authorities. Russian officials did not give their approval to us. As a result, Austrian Airlines was forced to cancel today's flight from Vienna to Moscow," Austrian Airlines spokesperson said.

The EU authorities have urged airlines to avoid Belorusian airspace after the forced landing of a Ryanair flight from Greece to Lithuania allegedly aimed at arresting a dissident journalist onboard.
