Some user segments on FB receive 80% of misinfo - whistleblower

Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen told the United Kingdom parliament members during a hearing on Monday that the company divided social media users into segments, 4% of which are receiving 80% of misinformation, including data regarding the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to Haugen, the reason Facebook does not want to crack down on the fake content is that it doesn't want to lose even "small slivers" of profit that the views bring. She claims that artificial intelligence currently only picks up on 3% to 5% of violence and hate speech.

Haugen concludes that the safest way to design social media is to move to systems that are human-scaled, rather than AI-oriented. She also added that companies such as Google and Twitter are far more transparent with their data sharing than Facebook.
