Europe opens lower with data, coronavirus in focus

Major European stock markets opened lower on Friday as the economic data, as well as the latest developments concerning the coronavirus pandemic, take center stage in today's trading session. Germany, the European Union, and the United Kingdom will reveal their preliminary reports on manufacturing and services in January. Earlier, Britain unveiled its results in retail sales, which missed expectations, and consumer confidence. Meanwhile, the EU leaders agreed to discourage any non-essential travel, while the UK said it was considering closing its borders.

The DAX opened 0.34% lower as Covestro AG fell by 0.96%. The FTSE 100 decreased by 0.14%, with the International Consolidated Airlines Group SA going down by 2.33%. The CAC 40 declined by 0.39% as Infineon Tech AG dropped by 2.04%.

The euro lost 0.12% to the dollar, selling for $1.21545 at 8:57 am CET. A minute later, the pound sterling sank 0.50% against the greenback to change hands for $1.36690.
